Fanlistings: Music - Musicals / Soundtracks
Chess - Benny Andersson and Bjorn Alvaeus
The first musical I saw in the West End. I rediscovered my enjoyment of the music quite recently - it is varied, fitting the different characters and settings, with some wonderful themes.
Phantom of the Opera - Andrew Lloyd Webber
I fell in love with this the first time I heard it, aged about 10. I've twice seen the stage production in London, which was one of my most memorable birthday treats.
The Village - James Newton Howard
Haunting soundtrack to the M. Night Shyamalan film, with a beautiful violin theme played by Hilary Hahn.
Michael Nyman
Nyman is a musician and composes other works beside film music, however my favourites among his work are his soundtracks, particularly The Piano and The End of the Affair.
Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore
This music is beautiful in itself, and also a perfect accompaniment to the films. I love the way it uses themes and motifs to enhance the different characters and places of Middle-earth.
Across the Stars (Star Wars) - John Williams
My favourite theme from the Star Wars prequals, and one of my favourite tracks by John Williams.
Hans Zimmer
I've lost count of how many times I've fallen in love with a soundtrack, later to find he wrote it. Favourites are Gladiator, King Arthur and Pirates of the Caribbean, but I also like earlier works eg Rainman and Thelma and Louise.
