Fanlistings: TV - Sci-Fi / Fantasy
Very many of my favourite tv shows fall into this genre, from the classics - Dr Who, Blakes 7 - through the Star Trek series, to Babylon 5, Stargate, The X-Files, and recent shows like Invasion and Surface.
Babylon 5
This was a fantastic series, and one of the most thoughtful sci-fi shows I've seen, avoiding neat resolutions to the dilemmas it brought up. Great characters, and a wonderfully detailed universe.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
For Buffy Summers, learning what it means to be the Slayer, chosen destroyer of evil, is combined with the challenges of teenage and early adulthood. This made for an original series which also had a good sense of humour, giving depth without taking itself too seriously.
Doctor Who / Torchwood
Although I knew of Dr Who and had seen bits and pieces of earlier series, I really became a fan with the 2005 series, and have since explored more of the earlier series. The Torchwood spin-off series sees the return of Captain Jack Harkness. It is Dark, witty and pushes new boundaries in the Dr Who universe.
Merlin (miniseries)
This was an interesting take on the Arthurian legends, with Merlin torn between the old ways and the new. And Sam Neill wonderful in the central role.
Star Trek Series
I love all the Star Trek series, with their eternal optimism and engaging characters, including some great female roles. Voyager was my favourite series.
Stargate SG-1
My favourite elements of this show were the references to Egyptian mythology (particularly in the early seasons), plus the relationships between the characters.
The 10th Kingdom (miniseries)
I fell in love first with the opening titles sequence, and then with the characterful Wolf, played by Scott Cohen. This is a wonderful tribute to fairy-tales, a modern story teeming with references to familiar tales.
Fox Mulder and Dana Scully: X Files
There was a wonderful dynamic between these two, their different approaches making them a perfect team. I particularly loved the early seasons, showing their growing trust and connection.
