Hitchcock Films
Hitchcock is a master of suspense and visual storytelling. Rebecca is particularly special, as it is a favourite of a friend who died some years ago.
Brief Encounter
This has become one of my favourite romantic movies. I love the honesty with which the heroine narrates her story. It is beatifully shot, with a glorious soundtrack of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto no. 2.
The Bourne Series
These films combine intense action and suspense with a well-crafted plot centering on Jason Bourne's search to expose the instutions that have programmed him as an assassin, and recover his true identity.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Martial arts fantasy and romance - a beautiful, deeply emotional story of characters caught between the call of the heart and the constraints of convention, honour and responsibility.
Melanie and Scarlett - Gone with the Wind
Melanie is loyal to Scarlett from the beginning; Scarlett appreciates her worth more slowly. Much of the relationship is unspoken; a quiet and continuously good influence in Scarlett's development.
Tristan - King Arthur
One of the good things to come out of the King Arthur movie. My favourite of the knights, as I think I identify with the character of the silent watcher. He is also the most graceful and beautiful to watch.
Chingachgook, Hawkeye and Uncas - Last of the Mohicans
This relationship is at the heart of the story; bridging two cultures and living in harmony with the land, in contrast to the violent imperialism of the whites and the warlike Huron.
The Mummy / The Mummy Returns
Action/adventure and the magic of ancient Egypt. These are both great fun, and the second possibly even better than the first. I love the way the characters are developed between the two films.
Once Upon a Time in the West
To me, the best Sergio Leone western. Every word and gesture is made to count; the final showdown brings a perfect resolution. Not to mention the epic scenery, and a beautiful Ennio Morricone score.
Pirates of the Caribbean
A great action / adventure film, and pure entertainment. Not to mention that Johnny Depp is absolutely terrific as Captain Sparrow. One of my favourite films to watch when I just need to chill out and have fun.
The Sound of Music
When I was 4, we stayed in a holiday cabin which had this film on video; I insisted on watching it almost every day. It's remained a favourite, and I can't watch it without recapturing some of the feeling I had as a child.
Thelma and Louise
Most outlaw / buddy movies are about relationships between men; at the centre of this one are two of the most interesting female roles in cinema. An intense and stirring journey of self-discovery.
