Alien Movies
Alien is a classic of Sci-fi / suspense cinema, beautifully designed and extremely atmospheric. Aliens is also a classic, more in the action genre. The later films also have some great moments. These films also introduced the strong, resourceful Ellen Ripley, first female sci-fi action hero.
Brief Encounter
A bitter-sweet romantic story told with touching honesty, poignant and moving without sentimentality. It is beatifully shot, with a glorious soundtrack of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto no. 2.
Blade Runner
A darkly poetic science fiction movie - one of the most atmospheric films, and one which touches on issues that are as relevant today as when it was first made.
The Bourne Series
These films combine intense action and suspense with a well-crafted plot centering on Jason Bourne's search to expose the instutions that have programmed him as an assassin, and recover his true identity.
The Dark Crystal
I still love this film, which I first saw at a friend's birthday party when I was about 6. Very clever puppet animation, and the story itself is haunting and mystical - a wonderful fantasy quest.
Dumbo - Dumbo
I think anyone who has felt an outsider can identify with this lovable elephant.
The English Patient
Moving war-time / romantic drama exploring themes of memory and identity.
E.T. - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
One of the favourites from my childhood, and I still love him. He appears at once so wise and so innocent.
Fantasia
Cinema and concert combined - classical favourites imaginatively translated into a series of short films. My earliest cinema memory.
