Whitby

Whiby, on the north Yorkshire coast is the site of a Benedictine monastery, founded in 657 under the abbess Hilda. Abandoned following Viking attacks in the 9th century, the monastery was refounded in the 11th century, and most of the ruins of the famous Whitby Abbey date from this later medieval monastery. I first visited in 1996, but the majority of these photos were taken on a visit in June 2009.
